Extendicare breaks ground on new long-term care home in Ottawa

Extendicare celebrated an official groundbreaking ceremony today to begin construction of a new, state-of-the-art long-term care home to serve the people of Ottawa when complete in 2023.

The new home in Stittsville will be designed to modern standards for privacy, comfort and infection prevention and control, and home to 256 of the region’s residents. The home will provide restorative care, palliative care and offer more space for families to connect with and support their loved ones.

Among the enhanced infection prevention and control design features, there will be no shared accommodation in the home. Every resident will have a private bedroom as well as a private washroom or a washroom shared with a maximum of one other individual. In addition, the design includes a secure outdoor courtyard at the main entrance to facilitate time outdoors and family visits.

The project continues Extendicare’s lengthy history in Ottawa, where it opened its first long-term care home in 1969, and where it currently operates 5 long-term care homes in the region.

“We have a proud legacy of serving Ottawa for more than 50 years. This new home will help us continue improving the care we deliver for decades to come,” said Dr. Michael Guerriere, President and Chief Executive Officer of Extendicare. “We are grateful to the province of Ontario for the support we have received for this project and more broadly to build a stronger, safer long-term care system. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the City of Ottawa for its ongoing partnership to look after the best interests of long-term care residents in this community.”

Today’s groundbreaking marks the latest step forward as Extendicare works diligently to replace or upgrade every older home in its network across Canada, as part of our plan to improve care, every day, for the people we serve and to improve the seniors’ care system.

With a total investment of $76.3 million in the construction of this new home, this project is an example of the significant investments major long-term care operators contribute to modernize the seniors’ care system for the people who need its services.

The new Stittsville home is the third of nine recently announced Extendicare projects to break ground in Ontario, overall representing a total of 1,880 long-term care beds and a $500-million Extendicare investment to construct modern homes across our network.
